About us

The history of Camping Lazy Rancho began in 1962, when Robert Rieder opened a campsite on the family’s farmstead, «Im Grüt». Originally, it was to be called «Lazy Alice» – an idea that arose from a heated discussion with his wife Alice. As Robert had dreamt of owning his own ranch all his life (and because Alice got her way), the name «Lazy Rancho» was born. For Robert, this name encapsulated exactly what he wanted to offer his guests: peace, relaxation and the feeling of simply not having to do anything for a change. Robert deliberately wanted to take a different approach – in his view, there were already enough campsites in the Bernese Oberland named after the surrounding mountains.

The beginnings were rather modest: a green meadow, basic toilet facilities with a cold-water shower, and a great deal of improvisation. Yet even back then, the site was a popular stopover for travellers.

Robert’s mother, Lina Rieder, already had a knack for looking after guests – she preferred to sell the farm’s own produce rather than charging for accommodation. This created a special, personal atmosphere early on, which has been preserved to this day.

Just a few hundred metres away, another camping story began to unfold almost simultaneously from 1959 onwards: Lily Blatter founded Camping Hobby. For many decades, the two campsites operated as separate businesses – albeit closely linked through the family.

Camping Hobby was run by Lily Blatter together with her daughter Heidi until the end of 2024. Stephan Blatter, Lily’s son, was always involved in the family business and provided active support.

In 1986, Aline Blatter-Rieder took over the management of Camping Lazy Rancho, and Stephan joined her in 1990. With great dedication, a spirit of innovation and a keen sense of hospitality, they steadily developed the campsite.

Over the years, the simple meadow has been transformed into a modern, well-maintained campsite that now welcomes guests from all over the world.

A special member of the team is Joao, who started at Camping Hobby in 1995 and has been part of our family business for over 30 years. He is responsible for everything that happens outdoors on the site and ensures that the grounds are always immaculate.

Joao is also a polyglot and speaks many languages, which enables him to give our international guests a warm welcome and look after them to the highest standard.

Over the years, it is not only guests’ expectations that have grown, but also the range of facilities on offer: modern sanitary facilities, rental accommodation, glamping, lovingly designed details and high standards of quality now define the overall experience.

Nevertheless, one thing has remained the same: the feeling of homecoming, taking a deep breath, being at one with nature, and the unique view of the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau.

In 2025, Cheyenne Blatter took over the operational management of the business, marking the next generation’s succession. Together with her sister Virginia, she is steering the family business into the future.

The story is thus continuing today into its third generation (Camping Hobby) and fourth generation (Lazy Rancho).

A significant milestone followed in 2026: The two separate sites merged to form a single campsite – Camping Lazy Rancho. Since then, the campsite has consisted of two distinct yet complementary areas:

Camping Lazy Rancho «Family & Adventures»: the original section, characterised by families, life and shared adventures, which is ideal for children and all age groups.
Camping Lazy Rancho «Adults Only»: the former Camping Hobby, now a peaceful retreat for adults seeking relaxation, nature and tranquillity.

What were once two sites have now become one – united by history, family and a shared vision.

Camping Lazy Rancho is more than just a campsite – it is a place where hospitality has been practised for generations and continues to live on. A place where tradition meets new ideas, stories unfold and memories are made – for over 60 years.
